I’ve started trying to work my way through River Heights on my Zomato profile. My goal is one day to be an expert in every Winnipeg neighbourhood (vanity, I know). It’s a slower process then I hoped, but with visits to my mom and occasional stops at CMU, I’m getting there. I visited Freshii recently, and have also managed to make a couple of stops at BIMI Korean-Japanese restaurant in the same mall. All You Can Eat It’s not very…Continue readingBIMI – Kenaston Village Mall

Peasant Cookery
Despite my many times through the Exchange, I’ve never paid a visit to Peasant Cookery. Not only that, but when they participated in Taste of the Nation I somehow managed to overlook their booth as I made my way around the floor. Well, this week I finally corrected that. Last Friday I was down in the Exchange to take in the opening of DomEsthetica a show by my friend Gabrielle Funk at the new Lantern Gallery. I got to know Gabrielle…Continue readingPeasant Cookery
There’s a lot of buzz around the coffee scene in Winnipeg, and it’s not all caused by excess caffeine. Thom Bargen is soon to be part of a new space on Graham Avenue. Twist Cafe has new owners, and Nils Vik of Parlour and his partners are working with Dogwood Coffee to bring small batch roasting to the city. They are sharing space with Forth Coffee, a new coffee house/restaurant in the Exchange. The cafe at Forth is managed by Renee Girard,…Continue readingForth Coffee – Dogwood Roaster
Although it’s been open for a while, it’s only recently that I’ve really noticed Gohe Ethiopian Restaurant on Sargent Avenue. I really enjoy Ethiopian food, I quite like taking the Injera and using it to scoop up my food in a meal otherwise devoid of utensils. Ethiopian food also tends to be quite spicy especially if you add lot of Berberi, the spice that dominates a lot of Ethiopian cooking. Walking into Gohe the interior is fairly stark. One thing…Continue readingGohe Ethiopian Restaurant
Pony Corral – Downtown
Prior to it’s being remodeled just after the Jets arrived back in town, the Pony Corral location on St. Mary Avenue was a place I visited with relative frequency. I’ve only been once in the time since, but decided recently that I would give it another try. One of the things that struck me a couple of years back was the quality of the interior redesign. The dark browns of the booth in the bar seem to offset well the…Continue readingPony Corral – Downtown
The other day I was underground at Portage and Main and decided I would make a stop for lunch at Seoul Nami which sits in the rotunda between Winnipeg Square and the Richardson building. There has been a lot of talk recently about possibly re-opening Portage and Main to pedestrian traffic. Moving to Winnipeg in 1980, I’ve only known a closed corner. Meanwhile, the underground has been part of my life at various times. I worked at Henry Armstrong’s in…Continue readingSeoul Nami – Downtown, Underground
