Lisbon Bakery – Mordens Chocolate

Lisbon Bakery and Mordens Chocolate are two specialty food outlets, that are within a couple of blocks of where I live. Both have been in business for a long time, in fact this year is the 60th anniversary for Mordens. Of the two, I more frequently visit Lisbon Bakery. It’s open early and a good place to pick up a cheap treat. I also went more frequently when The Strong Badger was open. I don’t head down Sargent as much…Continue readingLisbon Bakery – Mordens Chocolate

Pho Hoi An – Sargent Avenue

This is a new post on Pho Hoi An, a Vietnamese restaurant on Sargent Avenue. I originally wrote a review a couple of years ago. A couple of months ago I switched from WordPress hosted to self hosted. Unfortunately somewhere in that process I lost that original post. So, while this post will only deal with my most recent visit, it does reflect two or three other past visits. I might even be able to add a couple of old…Continue readingPho Hoi An – Sargent Avenue

Thanh Huong Vietnamese Restaurant

Over the last few years I’ve reviewed about 20 or so Vietnamese restaurants. Even with that, there are still several that I haven’t gotten around to trying. One of these is Thanh HuongContinue readingThanh Huong Vietnamese Restaurant

Harmans Cafe – Sargent Avenue

Harmans is now closed. Back when I wrote up Akin’s restaurant, I mentioned that it was one of three restaurants that were part of the same building that houses both Mercadito Latino, and Harmans. Harmans is an Ethiopian restaurant with an interesting history. Harmans was originally a drug store that stood on the corner of Sherbrook Street and Portage Avenue. and among other things, was famous for its lunch counter. I have to admit, that for all the many times…Continue readingHarmans Cafe – Sargent Avenue

Saigon Star Vietnamese Restaurant

One of the culinary features of the part of Winnipeg I live in, is it’s proliferation of Vietnamese restaurants. A quick check of Google Maps lists at least 18 within at most 12 blocks of my house. Some have been there for a very long time, and it seems that there are always new ones popping up. One such restaurant, that if not entirely new, (the restaurants in the area also move around from time to time), is Saigon Star,…Continue readingSaigon Star Vietnamese Restaurant

Candle Light Indian Restaurant – Sargent

This restaurant has changed it’s name, it is no longer Candle Light, but Suba’s Cuisine. Although it advertises itself as Sri Lankan and South Indian cuisine, it also has a couple of fast food options listed on it’s window. I have not had a chance to try the new place out. One thing I have noticed is that the restaurant always seems to be empty no matter what time I walk by. Hopefully this new option will work out.  Since…Continue readingCandle Light Indian Restaurant – Sargent
