Oakwood Cafe on Osborne Street falls into that category of a place that I visited before I started blogging, but haven’t visited since. The South Osborne neighbourhood is one that has transformed a lot over the last 20 years. Much like the east end of Corydon Ave. coffee shops, cafes, and restaurants, have sprouted up along this street. Oakwood Cafe is one of the flagship restaurants of this renaissance. It began as a place called Samantha’s, but has existed as…Continue readingOakwood Cafe – 600 Osborne St.
Salisbury House is a Winnipeg institution. A small, local chain, that is half diner, half fast-food place. It’s not a place that I visit regularly. However, there have been a couple of times in my life when Salisbury House(or Sals as it’s commonly called) was a fairly regular stop for me. The first period was about 35 years ago. I was working for Henry Armstrong’s printing in what was the old bus depot(now the Rice building). There was a Sals…Continue readingSalisbury House Memories
With pandemic restrictions eased, I’m looking forward to seeing 2022 Fall Suppers make a return. I know that during the last couple of pandemic years, there were some that went to a take out method. On the whole though, fall suppers disappeared from the dining landscape. I’ve been thinking about these dinners for the last couple of weeks. It looks like this year there will be at least a few dinners for people to enjoy. For the first few years…Continue reading2022 Fall Suppers Return
This is post number 5 in this year’s Fried Chicken Fest series. This week involved trudging though snow, and three more restaurants. Two of my orders for this post were from places whose Fried Chicken Fest offering I had tried in previous years: The Tallest Poppy, and Little Goat Food & Drink. My third choice for this post is Fionn MacCool’s Grant Park. This last couple of days, I’ve tried getting to the restaurants, and the snow clearing efforts of…Continue readingSnow Way I am Chickening Out
Prairie Ink Restaurant is the located inside the Grant Park location of McNally Robinson Booksellers. McNally is my new books, bookstore of choice. If you read any of my book reviews, the links to the books in them are usually links to McNally. For used books, I generally visit Bison Books. Prairie Ink falls into that category of: Restaurant I’ve visited many times, but never got around to writing about. In the good old Pre-Covid days, I went a few…Continue readingPrairie Ink Restaurant McNally Robinson Booksellers
It’s November and the Fall Supper Season is starting to wind down. There are still some happening both in and out of Winnipeg, Last night I went to St Saviours Anglican’s Turkey Fall Supper. St Saviours is located in the north east of Winnipeg. It’s in a working class neighbourhood. There is a lot of residential housing, with several industrial offices not all that far away. There are a few community groups that are part of the parish(of that more…Continue readingSt Saviours Anglican Fall Supper
