Sukkothai Restaurant – Osborne Village

While you may think, judging from my last three posts, that I been living on nothing beyond fried chicken, there are other restaurants I’ve been watching. One of these is Sukkothai restaurant, in Osborne village.

A fresh, spicy, and tasty Pad Thai from Sukkothai

Sukkothai Thai restaurant, is one of those places that I visited years ago, before my blogging days. The building it sits in on the west side of Osborne Street was once a KFC, or Champs if you go back far enough. The decor of the current restaurant is more pleasant than the old fast food days.

I remember two things about the first visit. One, is that it was with a group of friends. Two, I was the only one who went over 5 on the heat scale.

Both of my recent interactions with Sukkothai have been of the delivery nature. For my first order I wanted the green curry soup, Kaeng Kew Waan, as it is named on the menu.

The green curry soup came as spicy as I requested, and made for a substantial lunch.

I also ordered the Pad Thai featured at the top of the page. This is one of the rare occasions where I did not eat both in one setting. I think, in part, this is because of how spicy the soup was, along with the portion size.  Sukkothai is one place where they really deliver on the heat. Best of all the heat does not compromise the flavour. 

In the soup, the vegetables are crisp. The meat is tender.  The soup base delivers both spicy warmth, and the sort of flavours that warm your heart as well as your body. 

When it came to the Pad Thai, I stored it in the fridge at work, and ate it the following day.  Despite being eaten the day after ordered, the dish still had a lot of freshness to it. The citrus added by a bit of lemon brings all the flavours to life. 

Another Delivery Meal

The second order from Sukkothai ended up being an earlier supper. I ordered the wing appetizer and Mee Krob.

I enjoyed the wings. The skin is crispy, and the dipping sauce is terrific. The one thing I would like to see, is a mix of flats and drumettes. There is not an awful lot of meat on these wings.

Both parts of the Mee Krob put together. For perspective, that is a 2L bowl.

Much like the other entree dishes I ordered from Sukkothai, the portion size on the Mee Krob is really substantial. Again, the vegetables are fresh and crunchy. The gravy is full of flavour, and the heat lived up to the advertisement. 

Summing Up

I tried four dishes from Sukkothai. Three of them fall into the category: I would be happy to order them over and over. The chicken wings are a little scant as far as meat goes, but the flavour and texture are spot on.

One more thing about Sukkothai, is that there is so much of the menu which I have not explored. However, given my experience with the items I have tried, I would definitely want to try more of them. Now, I just need to find some friends who appreciate heat as much as I do, so that when Sukkothai is open again for in person dining, we could go for a group meal.
