Standing on Guard – Dessert Fundraiser

This last week has been a very busy week. The twin themes of food and remembrance have been at it’s heart. On Tuesday, there was the Remembrance Day service and Roast Beef Dinner at St. Philip’s. Friday, I received a basket of MB holiday goodies.  Friday was also my usual time of cooking for my Confirmation class. Today, I cooked for the Saturday evening service at St. Margaret’s. Afterwards. I enjoyed desserts as part of the Standing on Guard, fundraiser.
Standing on Guard consists of six videos chronicling the history of the six military units that have made Manitoba their home. The six are The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada; The Royal Winnipeg Rifles; The Fort Garry Horse; 2 Bn Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry; The Winnipeg Grenadiers; and 38 Service Battalion. Each of the videos is about half an hour long.
The videos are the work of Jon Ted Wynne. A long time member of the Manitoba Theatre Community, particularly in conjunction with his company The King’s Players. We also share a bit of a bond. Not only did Jon Ted direct me in the Christmas Pageant at Church of the Way one year, we were also baptized together, some 25 years ago.
Jon Ted has been working on the Standing on Guard series over the last four years. Creating such a series requires a huge amount of dedication and perseverance. The dedication and perseverance has been further tested as Jon Ted has been battling cancer for much of the time that the films were in process.
One of the many damaging aspects of dealing with cancer and other illnesses, is the drain it places on the individual resources. So, the men’s group of St. Margaret’s got together to create these dessert fundraiser evening. The evening mainly featured the showing of two of the Standing on Guard videos, along with well wishes from some of Jon Ted’s friends and military members representing The Queen’s own Cameron’s and Battalion 2 of The PPCLI.

After the program people were invited downstairs to enjoy dessert and coffee. There was an amazing assortment of desserts available to try. The centerpiece of the desserts were three cakes from Jeanne’s Bakery, that featured regimental photos, and a photo of a bugler.

Most of the rest of the desserts were contributed by members of the parish, along with a selection of cupcakes that came from CocoaBeans. As the gallery below will demonstrate, there were lots of great choices, and the parish has a lot of baking talent.

I had a couple of small items, and a slice of the cheesecake which was absolutely wonderful.

Jon Ted’s battle with cancer is ongoing, and so will be the support of St. Margaret’s. They are very well done, and provide a fitting tribute and memorial to the many troops who have found their home in Manitoba.
