When I think of Smitty’s, two things come to mind. The first is the family pancake restaurants. The second is the softball teams they sponsor. I don’t hear much about them now, but a couple of decades ago, they were stars of the Canadian softball scene.
Smitty’s is a popular place if you wish to go and watch a Bomber or Jets game. Given my general dislike of crowds, I haven’t visited on these occasions, but their a recently priced option for a night out with friends to watch the game.
It had been years since I had been to a Smitty’s. However, at the beginning of the year, I included them among the restaurants I visited during Fried Chicken Fest. In that post I mention the pancakes I ordered. I’ve included the picture of them below.
All three of these visits are to the Smitty’s at Pembina and Grant. I did pay one visit to the location
Smitty’s for Breakfast
My next visit at Smitty’s I chose to go with a more traditional breakfast. I ordered myself an omelette.
I ordered the Bacon Denver Omelette. The picture above looks a little off-kilter, because the toast comes on a separate plate. Plus the bacon is piled on the omelette, and not off to the side.
I like this omelette because it comes with both ham and bacon. There is a good mixture of vegetables and plenty of cheese. You get a choice of shredded or cubed hash browns. I generally prefer the shredded, so that’s what I ordered.
The omelette also came with two slices of lightly toasted bread. Fortunately for me, I prefer my toast to be quite light. There was jam(raspberry) and peanut butter included.
On both of my first two visits the service was quite good. The orders were taken quickly, delivered quickly and the refills were filled up in good order.
Although it was quite hot when I visited I chose to be seated in the patio area. The Grant Park location has a patio that comes with a few wooden slats, and a bit of shade provided by the building itself. There is also a section that has been expanded onto the parking lot with some tables featuring umbrellas to keep the sun and/or rain off.
For my meal I ordered the Honey BBQ Bacon Burger and Fries. Along with the burger and fries, I added a cup of Bacon Potato Soup. There is a clear, bacon-y theme to my order.
The soup is good and creamy. I like the fact that there are several chunks of potato in it as well. The seasoning was really good, and not overly salty.
The burger was also really enjoyable. There is a pretty decent sized beef patty. Along with that there are three slices of bacon, all nicely crisped up. Plenty of cheese is melted over the patty and bacon.
I was pleasantly surprised that in addition to the advertised onion rings, the were also a couple of rings of white onion, tomato, pickle, and lettuce on the top burger bun. All in all, a very satisfying burger.
One of the Saturday drink special is Smitty’s Caesar. This is a good version of the drink, and at only $5.00 not a bad buy. I only ordered one because by the time anyone came back to my table to see if I wanted anything else, I had completely finished my meal.
While my first two visits to Smitty’s featured good to very good service, this one did not. My server said it was his first day. However, it’s clear that the rest of the staff didn’t do anything to support him and make his first day any easier.
When I was shown to my table I was given a food menu, but not a drink one. When two diners were seated across from me, they told the hostess they wanted coffee and water, but that was not passed on to the server, who came out later to ask them what they wanted to drink.
This would not have bothered me so much if the bill didn’t have a request for a 5-star review. If you want 5-star reviews, you need to be delivering a 5-star experience.
Although it wouldn’t be high on my list, I would return to Smitty’s. They do offer a good meal at a reasonable price.
