One of the food trucks that I missed out on during the Fringe Festival was Goldie’s Fries.  Most of the summer the truck is situated just off the edge of the Cube.  Goldie’s has been around for a while, but was out of commission for almost two years after an accident that occurred while the truck was headed to a Bomber game.  You can read that story here, but the truck is now back up and in business.  Goldie’s claim is to have the best fries in town.

Side of Goldie's TruckAs you may be able to see on the menu in the picture at the top, Goldie’s offers a variety of hot dogs, smokies, etc., but advertises their fries at the center of the menu.  I decided to go with the poutine.  So, a few comments.

Value:  The menu prices are pretty much in keeping with any other truck or cart that serves hot dogs, smokies and hamburgers.  I had the poutine for $7.00.  The portion size made this the kind of meal that you could split between two and still have a reasonably satisfying lunch.     4.5/5
Selection:  Has everything you would expect from a hot dog and fry truck, with the addition of homemade perogies.  One plus is that they include malt vinegar on the condiment table.  4.5/5
Quality:  The poutine was top notch.  The fries were golden brown, crispy and crunchy.  Rather than curds Goldie’s uses what looks like grated marble cheese.  Doesn’t matter, because it still melts well and gets all gooey and stringy.  The gravy is the best I’ve found on any poutine so far.  You can also get, as I did, fried onions on top, which are fried to translucent perfection.  4.5
Portability:  Comes in closeable container. 4.5/5
Service:  Was friendly and efficient.  Mr. Leiman, while not taking the order, still took time to put in a little conversation. 5/5

Goldie’s Overall:

 I wouldn’t give them the title of the best fries in Winnipeg(One of these days I’ll have to do a post on that), but they are very,very good and make a great base for a really fine poutine. 4.5/5
