Winnipeg’s food truck scene continues to grow.  It’s not surprising then that as it does so, there are more trucks offering the same type of food.  On my way to work earlier in the week, I noticed a new, blue truck on Broadway. This is Fired Up Pizza. 

Last year saw the debut of The Red Ember Pizza Truck.  Red Ember sells wood-fired pizzas made from home-grown ingredients.  Fired Up doesn`t claim the home-grown part, but is also selling wood-fired pizza.

I came back for lunch that day and again on Friday. I tried to meet up with some former co-workers both days.  It didn`t pan out the first time, and the second time, I just went over to my former workplace at L.C. Taylor after I had gotten my pizza.  What follows are my thoughts on Fired Up.

Fired Up Pizza Value:

The pizzas range from $8.50 to $10.50.  This sounds good until you realize that they aren’t tax inclusive.  That means they are about $1.10 to $1.35 more than what is written on the board.  In reality it’s between $10.00 and $12.00.  Drinks are $1.50 or $2.00 if you go for the San Pellegrino 4/5

Selection:

Fired Up offers 6 different pizza choices.  From two topping to more deluxe varieties.  At this point despite the word pasta in their name, they don’t offer any for sale. 3.5/5

Fired Up Quality:

Not surprisingly, the quality is not up to the level of Red Ember, but it is still reasonably high.  The pizzas are a little bit doughy and the toppings aren’t always spread evenly.  Plus there is a tendency for the crusts to be overcooked.  The first time I went they remade a couple because they were overcooked.  However, I’ll allow for a little learning curve and give them 4/5

Portability:
This is one where they get full marks.  The pizzas are served on a solid paper plate, and they offer pizza boxes for those who wish to carry them in covered fashion.  5/5

Service:

This is where Fired Up really falls down.  The first time I went, they were taking people’s names and then when the order came just calling out the type of pizza rather than the name of the person who ordered it.  I had a real long wait as four people who ordered after me got their pizzas before me.  The next time, with about 10 people in front of me, it took me 20 minutes to get to the window, and another 15 to get my pizza.  Unless you have an hour lunch break this is way to long.  This time they used tickets, but they still had the wrong number for my order. Service gets. 1.5/5

Fired Up Overall:

Fired up has the potential to be a real good addition to the Winnipeg food truck scene.  However, until they work out a way to improve their service, I’d say only go when there is no line up. 3.5/5
