Banh Mi King – Portage Avenue

I rather stumbled across Banh Mi King the other day, even though it’s smack dab in the middle of Portage Avenue across from the University of Winnipeg. I found myself wandering down there on my way home a few days ago and decided to stop in.

I don’t know who designed it, but the interior reminds me of King + Bannatyne and Chosabi. While a pleasant style with the window bar seating and one large table, the design seems to be getting repeated a fair bit. Ordering is done at the counter in a fast casual style. The only problems I have with that is, although the cutlery is all on the table, you have to remember to pick up your napkins when you place your order.

Despite Banh Mi being in the name of the restaurant I went with Phô,another Vietnamese favourite, on my first visit.

The beef and sausage in this dish are excellent, and I really liked the chew on the noodles. Plus, this is one of the richest broths I’ve had in any Phô I’ve tried.

Bahn Mi are Vietnamese subs. Served on Baguettes, they have a reputation for being large and well filled. They also are generally known for being an inexpensive lunch option.
I chose the cheapest option, the cold cut and pate. At just under $6.00 there is enough in the sandwich to make for a good meal. I did find that the pate was a little overwhelming in it’s strengths. In some bites it seem to hide all other flavours. I appreciate the fact that the cold cuts are better quality. The ham is obviously off the bone, for example.

Not knowing what size my Banh Mi would actually be, I also ordered what is labelled as a Vietnamese Noodle Salad, what you would find as Bun on most Vietnamese menus. I ordered the charbroiled pork option to bring a different protein profile to my meal.

The meat in the salad is well seasoned and well spiced, and there are a good mixture of vegetables as well. The dressing had a little extra fat to it compared to some, which is quite nice. You can see it around the edge of the little bowl.

Service at Banh Mi King is friendly and efficient. On my second visit their were several orders in front of mine, yet I didn’t have to wait all that long for my meal to arrive. Only questionable price is $1.99 for a can of pop. This will be a future stop as I travel Portage Avenue.
