India Palace Restaurant – Ellice Avenue

India Palace restaurant is one of my neighbourhood restaurants. Yet, I don’t really associate with where I live. Probably because, most times I’ve had their food, it’s been at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. That is one activity I really missed during this pandemic. Nothing like a quick visit to the India Palace stall between plays.

While I can not visit the restaurant these days, I have been in on two or three occasions. I remember going with a group of friends from the neighbourhood several years ago. I also like the fact that the restaurant is big enough that you can sit a big group of people. Yet at the same time, you can find a place to eat on your own.

India Palace Papri Chaat
The Papri Chaat from India Palace makes a tasty, creamy counterpoint to their spicier dishes.

I think that is also part of the reason that it has taken me until now to review the restaurant. Earlier this year, before the lockdown set in, I visited to remind myself of their buffet. It was toward the end of the day, but there were still a lot of items to choose from. I have visited the buffet a few times of the years, and it has always been good. There is a nice variety of both meat and vegetable dishes.

India Palace Birthday Meal

This year my birthday, fell on the day of Canadian Thanksgiving. I think Canada should give up of the Thanksgiving Day thing, and just make my birthday a national holiday. One of my birthday gifts was a DoorDash gift certificate. That’s the main reason I am trying out DoorDash these days.

India Palace Samosa
This is one of the two samosas that came with my order.

The India Palace is quite close to me, but being my birthday celebration and all, I decided to order in. One good thing with my first order was that it came 50 percent off. With a deal of that nature, I figured I would order in a real feast.

I ordered in: Samosas, Papri Chaat, Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan, and Lamb Vindaloo. My food also came with a large container of Basmati Rice. I should have remembered this when I placed my order with Noormahal.

Garlic naan
I am pleasantly surprised by the portion size of the garlic naan. They taste really good, too.

Because of the size of the order I divided it into two days worth of meals. With the exception of the naan. I wolfed that down during my first meal.

Chicken Tikka Masala
There is a good bit of chicken in this Chicken Tikka Masala.

The meat in both of the meat dishes is very tender. There is a lot of lamb and chicken. On top of that, both dishes came with a good deal of heat, as requested.

India Palace Lamb
Lamb Vindaloo. There seems to be a habit among Indian restaurants such as India Palace, to include huge amounts of gravy with their lamb dishes.

I really enjoy the samosas. They are well cooked. They come stuffed with potatoes and peas, and are well-seasoned. Papri Chaat is an Indian dish that I have only recently discovered. I really enjoy the mix of pastry, potato, chutney, with yoghurt spread on top.

Summing Up:

I started by saying that India Palace is a restaurant that I associate with the Fringe Festival. As I think about the place and the pandemic, it raises a few questions. When will the Fringe Festival start again? Will buffets return as a popular form of eating out? Finally, how will restaurants like India Palace survive through the pandemic?

However you place your order, India Palace is a long standing member of the local restaurant community. If you get the chance, take the opportunity to order in from them.
