Booster Juice – Downtown Locations.

As this blog is self-sustained and self-supported, I’m always looking for deals that will help me out as I dine about town. So, a couple of months ago when Ian McCausland was selling Booster Juice coupons in support of the Scout Troop that he helps to lead, I thought it would opportunity to support a good person, a good cause and save myself a few dollars as I checked out Booster Juice.

Booster Juice is a made in Canada success story. Starting out in Alberta in 1999, the chain has expanded to over 350 franchises in under 20 years. It’s been years since I’ve visited a Booster Juice, but if my memory serves, for the longest time smoothies were all they served.

When I went recently I realized they had expanded to include protein ball, protein bars, puddings and wraps/sandwiches. Since my coupons were only for smoothly, that was mainly what I tried, but I did add a couple of the smaller type extras to my orders.

Most of my visits were paid to the location in the University of Winnipeg Annex building, but I also paid one visit to the Winnipeg Square location. The reason for this was that U of W location ended up being virtually empty on each of my visits, so I decided to make one visit to a busier location.

Booster Juice in the Evening

The Booster Juice franchise located closest to me is the above mentioned U of Winnipeg location. One of it’s appeals is that it has really good hours, especially on weekdays when it is open from 7 am until 10 pm. My first visit here was just around  8 in the evening. I decided to go with something basic and got one of the berry smoothies. They were offering a free regular booster or a specialty booster for a dollar something. I chose to go with the specialty calcium booster.

The smoothie was quite enjoyable. It had the thickness of a fairly decent milkshake, and the berry flavour came through quite nicely.

Booster Juice in the Morning

My next visit was an early morning visit. The U of W location opens at 7 am and I was there shortly after opening time. My order on this occasion was the Nuttin’ Better. This contains WowButter, a peanut butter substitute, bananas, skim milk, pineapple, vanilla frozen yogurt, whey protein. I added the protein booster, which features creatine (there go my chances of making Cooperstown).

The nuttin better smoothie was the favourite among the four smoothies I tried. It tasted like a mild version of peanut butter and had the smoothest and creamiest texture of any of the smoothies I tried. It is though, the thickest, and requires the most effort to consume.

On my third trip, I decided to add a couple of the food items available at Booster Juice. My smoothie was again a berry one, and I can’t remember if it was the same one I ordered the first time or not.

My additions were three of the protein balls that Booster Juice sells along with one of the Kind brand bars they carry. The protein bars were just OK. The double chocolate being the best. I don’t know if it’s because they’re kept in a cooler for an extended period, but all three were a little on the dry side.

The KIND bar got tossed into my bag after I purchased it. It remained there until late in the afternoon and served as a great pick me up as my work day was winding down. I know the claim is that the juices as supposed to help give a great deal of energy to your day, but the KIND bar was the only item I tried that gave me a real sense of a lift.

A high fiber Kind bar, Almond, Sea Salt & Dark Chocolate. A very tasty way of adding fibre to your diet.

Booster Juice Winnipeg Square

During my first three trips to Booster Juice, there was never more than one other person in line when I went to place my order. Not surprisingly, I ended up receiving my order quite efficiently and promptly on each occasion. The service was friendly and well informed as well.

However, I wanted to know how long I might have to wait if I ended up at a busier location. Given that I’m in and out of the downtown, the location at Winnipeg Square seemed like a good choice. This was reinforced on one of my U of W visits, when one of the employees who worked at both locations commented to a co-worker how much busier Winnipeg Square was.

I didn’t get to Winnipeg Square at the peek of the lunch rush, but when I arrived there were still 8 to 10 people in front of me, either waiting to order or to pick up their orders. This time, I went with the UnBeetable: Beets, carrots, strawberries, mangos, apples. I also ordered a Chocolate Chia Pudding. Despite the business at the store, I only had to wait 3 or 4 minutes to place and receive my order.

The UnBeetable would be my number 2 smoothie after the Nuttin Better. The Beet flavour comes through, but isn’t overwhelmingly strong, as beets can sometimes be. It’s also not too sweet.

The Unbeetable: Beets, carrots, strawberries, mangos, apples.

While the Unbeetable smoothie was good, the Chocolate Chia Pudding was a complete disappointment. The chocolate flavour barely registered. The texture was mushy and the overall the dish was bland.

The chocolate chia pudding is definitely something I wouldn’t order again. Mushy with very little flaour.

I think when it comes to chia seeds, they serve a more useful purpose in this form.

I did find the smoothies to be quite substantive. They are filling when you are on the run. However, I’m still in the camp that believes food should be crunchy, crispy, and chewy, as opposed to liquidy. However, a visit to Booster Juice isn’t a bad way to get yourself going for the rest of the day.

  1. An interesting take on smoothies. I’ve never been able to wrap my head around them. I much prefer foods more in their natural state – much more satisfying to do my own masticating!

  2. We have a Booster Juice up here. It’s a food-court style location in the Canada Games Centre, our recreation facility. Given my limited use of recreation facilities, I haven’t had one of their smoothies, since moving North.
