The Fyxx – Espresso Bar

Winnipeg’s coffee scene has changed quite a bit over the last few years. However, it’s not that long ago that there wasn’t much beyond the chains when it came to coffee choices in the town. Late night coffee and dessert choices seemed to be limited mainly to Osborne Village and the odd place here and there.

I remember when The Fyxx first opened on Broadway and Donald. It quickly became the place where groups gathered for a taste of higher end coffee and desserts. At one point it was so successful that there were three locations in town. The cafe seemed to ultimately be a victim of it’s own success as both of the other locations no longer exist and only the Broadway location is still open.  It’s status as a no longer happening kind of place is further emphasized by the fact that it closes at 6 pm Friday through Sunday.

My own history with The Fyxx is mainly connected my years working upstairs from it at L.C. Taylor. It was a convenient place to stop for a cinnamon bun on my way into work, or to pop down for a specialty coffee when the urge hit.

Soup and Sandwich

Despite it’s changed status as a popular hangout, The Fyxx still makes for a pretty decent lunch spot. On my first visit last month, I stopped in for soup and a sandwich. I ended up with the soup of the day and the Smokin Jack Sandwich. The soup was pretty good, and the sandwich came with plenty of filling, There was good flavour to the sandwich, but the chicken appeared to be pre-formed pieces, and the sourdough bread was a little on the bland side. I found it particularly disappointing as I tried it not long after the sourdough from Red Spring Bakery while I was at Verde Juice Bar.

I topped it off with an Americano (no photo). The Americano was good and strong, but it was also quite dark. I find drinking dark roasts harder and harder, but it’s quite good if that’s how you prefer your beverage.

Soup and Salad

The Fyxx offers soup and sandwich or soup and salad as combos. You can get a half soup and salad, or you can get a sandwich with a half soup/or salad. However, I wanted to find out what the full are like, so on my second trip I ordered a full soup and full salad.

The Greek salad, which is pictured at the top of this post, is substantial and comes with a good mixture of all the ingredients. I liked the fact that it wasn’t overly dressed.

The full portion of the soup, in this case a chicken corn chowder, is quite substantial. I also really enjoyed the flavour. It had a taste and feel of good homemade cooking. True comfort food.

Service at The Fyxx was quick and professional. In addition to a wide variety of beverages they also carry a number of baked goods as well. The Cafe is large with plenty of seating and lots of natural lighting coming through the windows. Not a bad place at all to stop for lunch.
