Harveys – 600 Portage Avenue

My previous post I wrote about Nuburger, a gourmet burger shop here in Winnipeg. Shortly after I was walking down Portage Avenue deciding where I would like lunch, and it suddenly occurred to me that I should give Harveys another try.

My first visit to Harveys had not overwhelmed me. I had heard that their burgers were a cut above the average fast food place. However, I found my burger to be rather grey and tough. The burger patty reminded me of the Burns brand frozen burgers that you get at your local grocery store.

One thing that caught my eye as I was walking up to the store was the advertisement for an Angus burger. Now, Angus has become the fast food burger buzzword, meaning that it’s almost meaningless. Yet, I figured that it at least should be better than the regular burger. Feeling in the mood for something substantial I went with the Angus and Braised Beef burger combo. I decided I would choose onion rings for a side, and although not part of the combo I added an order of four Key Lime Mini doughnuts.

The burger was quite good, although the braised beef didn’t add a whole lot to it. Mainly, because it was overcooked and had a gummy texture to it. Still, this was better than most fast food burgers out there. However, as I mentioned in my Nuburger post, that burger had a fresh off the BBQ flavour to it, that the Harveys one can’t match.

The onion rings on the other hand were a disappointment. It seems that no one does a good onion ring. Even at A&W, my standard for fast food onion rings the coating tends to fall off and occasionally gives you a bit of hot onion slapping you on the chin. Sides are one area that specialty burger joints display the extra value in the higher prices.

The surprise on the menu was the mini doughnuts. You receive 4 for $1.99 and the lime flavour was strong and appropriately tart. This may be the best fast food dessert I’ve tried in a while.

On the whole Harveys wasn’t bad. The service was adequate, and the quality justifies the prices being a little more than other fast food restaurants, but on the whole I’d prefer to spend more, even if it means making fewer visits, to a place such as Nuburger.
