I have yet to visit the Canadian Museum of Human Rights. I have however managed to make a couple of visits to ERA Bistro, the restaurant housed inside. The first of these visits I made during Le Burger Week Last year, and then I went again a few weeks ago.
The first thing you notice when you walk into ERA Bistro is how wide-open and airy it feels. It contains an interesting mix of tables for small groups along with a very large communal table. One nice touch is when you get to your table, if you ask for water they bring you your own jug. As someone who drinks a lot of water during the course of the day I really appreciate this.
ERA Bistro Burger
For Le Burger Week, 2015 edition, I ordered the ERA-sistible burger. This isn’t the most inventive burger out there, but it comes with a good helping of bacon on top. Lot’s of bacon makes any items better. Also, as you can see from the picture below, the bun in out of sight, because of a great burger to bun ratio. It’s a little pricey, but a satisfying meal.
ERA Bistro Soup and Poutine:
A little while back I visited the restaurant again. This time it was in the late afternoon, and so it was relatively empty. This meant that the service was even better than on the previous occasion, as there was more staff to pay attention to each diner.
I started with soup and then added on poutine for my main. I asked for the soup first, and then for the poutine to follow. The restaurant has an open plan which means you can see into the kitchen. It meant I could tell that they actually waited until I was finished my soup before they started my poutine. That way it came out fresh and hot.
The borscht at ERA Bistro puts more of a focus on the cabbage than on the beets. This means that it has a milder flavour than some. I like this, and I like the fact that there is also a lot of cabbage in the bowl. This is a good sized portion as well. It’s one of the best items on the menu when it comes to value.
The Poutine also comes in a good sized portion. In some ways it reminded me of the poutine from PVG’s Breakfast Club. This is both a bad and good comparison. On the bad side, there is no real gravy with this dish. On the good side, while both have an atypical cheese topping, the one from ERA gives a reasonable measure of moisture to the poutine.
ERA Bistro Summary
The coffee is good. As the service is good, you are also going to get refills on a regular basis. On the whole, ERA Bistro does seem a little overpriced for what you get. However, the food is always good and the ambience and service are well above average. So, once in awhile it makes for a nice change.
Now, all I need to do is visit the museum itself.
