It’s been a couple of weeks since I visited the Holy Eucharist Fish Fry. I’ve had a rather busy schedule that has prevented me from getting out as much as I’d like, but last night I managed to make it to the Fall Supper at Saint Andrew’s River Heights United Church.
Saint Andrew’s is located on Oak Street just a few blocks north of where I lived during my high school and university years. Despite that, I wasn’t aware of it until I attended a choir concert there (I forget which choir), a few years ago.
This year’s fall supper is in the middle of a busy time for Saint Andrew’s as they are also observing their one-hundredth anniversary this month. Yet their was no lack of enthusiasm on the part of the many church members who were working to make the supper come off with a hitch.
One thing of interest to me was that I was asked when I phone to reserve a ticket if their was any particular table I wanted to be seated at, or people I wanted to be seated with. I said no and was assigned to table number 2.
Meeting Old Friends and New People at Saint Andrew’s
This worked out well for me on two fronts. The first was that when they called people up to eat the tables were called in numerical order, so I was up to the serving tables right at the start. The second was I ended up next to Peter a member of the choir at Saint Andrew’s and someone whom I had sung with in the Mennonite Oratorio choir many years back. The other people seated at the table were also choir members and we shared some conversation around shared musical connections.
Also visiting for the evening were Beau and Heather from 99.9 BOBFM. It was Beau’s first Fall Supper and from a few words afterwords I think it’s safe to say he really enjoyed it. It’s good to see BOB promoting the Fall Suppers in Winnipeg, as they’re sometimes presented as strictly a rural phenomenon.
Supper itself was a traditional Turkey Dinner. They set up two long rows of table to help everyone get through the line efficiently. The lines were largely staffed by the church youth who did a fantastic and friendly job of serving everyone. I took a smallish plateful the first time through, but by the time everyone was served there were still food left, so I went through for a little bit more.
One of the things that makes any Fall Supper great is a good selection of desserts. Particularly pies. Pies and Fall Suppers just go together and St. Andrew’s didn’t disappoint.
It was a bit of a toss-up for me between the Raisin and the Key-Lime pie. I went with the Key Lime and it was fantastic. It had a real terrific tartness to it along with a nice, light texture. There was wine available and I enjoyed a glass with my dinner, along with a good sized mug of coffee with my pie.
One of the things I’ve liked about attending the Fall Suppers, is that as a single person, it’s a great opportunity to go out, meet new people and enjoy conversation.
