Last Wednesday I met up with the Why Cook Wednesday’s Supper Club from St. Margaret’s, over at Carlos & Murphy’s. It’s been a while since I’ve gotten together with this group. However, scheduling and everything worked out and I was able to reconnect.
The group meets more frequently during Lent, which may seem a little odd. Dining out during a time associated with giving things up. However, the more frequent meetings serve as times of connection. Relationships can get lost during the rush of daily living, and sometimes the thing that we need to most give up is our focus on ourselves. Being with others on a regular basis is a good way to do that.
One of the reasons I sometimes miss meeting with this group is that I forget to RSVP my intentions when reservations are needed. I had forgotten to do so again this time, but decided to show up anyway thinking that 6:30 on a Wednesday evening would likely not be too busy at Carlos and Murphy’s. I wandered over to Osborne Village to happily discover that I had reasoned correctly.
It was happy hour when we arrived, and as we were waiting for other to show up I started off with a Barking Squirrel Beer. This beer is from Hop City Brewery out of Ontario. It was the staff recommendation, and I quite enjoyed it.
Carlos and Murphy’s also offers a basket of chips and salsa as an appetizer while you wait for your order to come. The service throughout the meal was excellent. Owing to us being a fairly large group there were several baskets to share. The salsa had a little kick to it.
Ordering at Carlos and Murphy’s
Carlos and Murphy’s style falls into the Tex-Mex category. When I ordered, I went more Tex than Mex. I also created a meal for myself out of appetizers. I ordered three dishes, Carlos Hot Wings, Chile Con Queso, and Cheese Crisps, I was glad I had taken a seat at the end of the table, as all three dishes arrived at the same time. The Queso was definitely my favourite item. I liked the heat in the hot wings, although it was a little too tobascoey (a new term) for my liking. The Cheese Crisps were okay as well.
It turns out that happy hour pricing applies to some appetizers as well as the drinks. As a result my bill was considerably chopped.
One of the people I was seated next to was Gary. Gary is a retired Economics professor who has spent time teaching in Szechuan Province in China. We share a love of spicy food. During the meal he was showing me some video he had taken of several restaurants he had visited. I’m thinking it may be time for a road trip.
One thing that caught my eye was the portion sizes. For those who ordered main courses they were huge. Several people had their leftovers wrapped up to take with them. I’m glad I took the chance to show up. This week, we will be just down the street at Buccacino’s. Believe it or not, I actually remembered to RSVP.
