Taste of Mediterranean

I was wandering westward down Graham Avenue a couple of weeks ago and noticed that there was a new restaurant located at the back of the same building that contains Starbucks.  The signs stated that the new place was called Taste of Mediterranean.

Chicken SignPerhaps the sign should have tipped me off to what the restaurant would be like.  The generic photograph of the chicken dinner reflects quite accurately the generic nature of the food served at the restaurant. The menu at Taste of Mediterranean is of the Gryro/Shawarma variety.  If you check the menu, you’ll find that there is good variety.  I can also say that the prices are quite reasonable.

Unfortunately the food itself ranges from mediocre to slightly above mediocre.  It says something about the quality of food at a restaurant that the best item on the menu is white rice.  The rice is well cooked without being over cooked.  The meat in the Greek gyro platter was reasonably well seasoned and not overly cooked.  The chicken from the quarter chicken on the other was getting to the point of being dried out.

The most disappointing item was the saucy potatoes.  The first time, there was only one potato chunk and the second time there was a little more potato, but the sauce was close to flavourless.  It tasted like someone had taken a can of Campbell’s Tomato Soup and added three cans of water to it instead of one.   Plus, there is a whole lot of potato mush in the sauce.  I found the pita I had with my Greek gyro platter was soft, but it was the softness that one would get from eating Wonder Bread. The garlic sauce they serve with the meals isn’t bad, but they slather across the meal in such quantities that it threatens to obliterate all other flavours (I forgot this the second time I ordered, but stopped them in time, so I only ended up with some sauce on my chicken.

One other thing I didn’t like was that they ask you if you want to dine in or take out, but you get your meal in a take out container no matter what you say.  It would be nice to have a real plate, not a styrofoam container in front of me.

Taste of Mediterranean is one of those places that’s entirely forgettable as a restaurant.  It would really be better off situated in the food court at Portage Place.  There’s nothing terrible about it, it’s reasonably priced, but if you’re making a list of places you want to eat at, this one should be closer to the bottom than the top.
