The latest visit in my attempt to try all various food trucks around Winnipeg was at Pimp my Rice, the new Filipino food truck. It’s been out for a few weeks now, but every time I’ve gone by it, the lineups have been very long. Today I got around that problem by taking an early lunch and getting to the truck at about 11:40a.m., at which point there was no lineup at all. For my lunch I had the Pansit, Lumpia(Filipino Spring Rolls) and a Coke.
So, here are my thoughts:
Nothing on the Menu is more than $7.00 dollars, BBQ pork skewers run from 1/$2.00, 2/$3.50, 3/$5.00. I had two items, which with a drink came to $11.00 dollars(all tax included). Next time, I would probably just order 1 item, a skewer and a drink. There was plenty of food in my lunch 4/5
You can find their menu here. Like the other trucks I’ve visited Pimp my Rice has a nice variety of dishes to choose from. The Pansit I ordered was the only vegetarian dish that I noticed. They also offer a variety of hot sauces to add a little heat to your meal. 4/5
The quality of the food I had was top shelf. The Lumpia was deep-fried yet managed to avoid any greasy feeling. The filling was moist and the spicing muted but still noticeable. The Pansit had great texture, with the tofu having a crisp crust and stayed firm after you bit into. The delicate citrus seasoning also prevented from becoming overbearing on a hot summer day. 4.5/5
Again, each item I ordered came in it’s own separate container, making it difficult to carry. Fortunately there were pleasant, and unoccupied park benches near by. Still, they do have closeable containers, and it would improve the experience if they used them when people were purchasing more than one item. 3/5
Can’t say what it would be like when it is busy, but my meal was placed quickly and prepared quickly. A mistake was made on my bill, but they corrected it without me having to tell them. Fixing your mistakes before they are brought to your attention is always a good thing. 4.5/5
Pimp My Rice Overall:
I’m going to give the truck 4.25/5. I might give it even higher if they work on the portability. This is definitely a truck you have to try.
I didn’t get a photo of my lunch this time, so you’ll have to let your gustatory imaginations run wild.
