Our eSIM for Portugal gives you immediate, high speed data for your eSIM enabled phone. Coverage is available virtually anywhere in Portugal. While this eSIM is data only, you can make phone calls with an app such as WhatsApp, Skype, Google Voice or others. Please note that your cell phone, besides being eSIM compatible, must also be unlocked.

Here is how to check to see if your phone or iPad is unlocked and eSIM compatible. Go to:

– General
– Information
– Carrier lock : you will see in this field “NO SIM restrictions” or “SIM restricted” which means it is unlocked.

In case your device is locked, contact your carrier and see if you qualify to have the device “unlocked” (you just need to provide its IMEI that you can find under the Settings or dial *#06# to display it on your screen).

Select one of our cell phone rentals for your next trip to Portugal. We offer several rentals for Portugal, an Android and a few iPhones. All rentals included unlimited high speed data in Portugal and unlimited calls and texts. Please note that while we do offer the iPhone 5, this is primarily for browsing the web and calling and texting as many apps are not supported on this phone. In addition, if you are planning on using Google Maps, a larger screen, such as the iPhone 6, 8 or X is much easier to see.

Please note that in order to call or text the USA or Canada, you must use an app. We recommend Talkatone as it is easy to use, free and you can call to landlines. WhatsApp of course is a great app but the limitation is that both users need to have it on their phone. Also, as noted above, to download most apps, you must rent an iPhone 8 or above.

All rentals for Portugal are ready to go as soon as you land and include everything you need including the plug adapters, chargers, instructions and a prepaid return package with USPS (for customers based in the US). You will receive the rental a couple of business days prior to your trip, time permitting. Once finished, simply delete any Apple ID you may have used on the phone, put it the prepaid package and drop it off at USPS.

Does the phone work in the US?

The phone does work in the US for data but not for calling unless you use an app.

Do I need to download an app?

You don’t need to but you certainly may. You can use your current Apple ID to download apps. Just remember to delete it off the phone prior to sending it back to Cellular Abroad.

Does this work in other parts of Europe or only Portugal?

The phone works anywhere in Europe seamlessly.

What is the latest I can order a rental phone?

You can order up to one business day prior to your departure as long as you call in before to 1:30pm Pacific Time. Exceptions can be made on a limited basis, even if you are leaving early in the morning – we can

Does the cell phone come charged?

Yes it does, but it’s always best to test the battery and charge phone before your departure.

Can I charge this phone on my trip?

Yes, you will receive an international charger and relevant plug adapters, so you can charge the phone in the U.S. or at your destination.

How do I return the phone?

Round trip shipping is included in your shipping fee for US based travelers.

What happens if I cancel?

If your rental has not shipped, you will only be charged a 5% reserve fee. If your rental has been sent out, you are responsible for a two week rental fee plus the shipping fee.

Are there any surcharges or hidden fees?

No. There are never any surprise fees or roaming fees. Everything is paid upfront.

What will the rates be for people calling me from the US?

That depends on the international long distance rates charged by their Long Distance Company or international calling card. We recommend using a app.

Does Cellular Abroad offer insurance against loss or damage?

Yes, rental insurance is available for $24 as an add-on once you add your item to the cart.

Our Portugal hotspot rental offers virtually unlimited 4G/5G LTE data for travelers to Portugal as well as anywhere else in Europe. You can use our Wifi hotspot with any Wi Fi enabled device including cell phones (even those locked to a specific carrier), tablets, PCs and any other device with Wi Fi. Using the hotspot is simple. Just turn it on, enter the password onto your personal device and that’s it! You can connect up to 10 users at a time.

To rent, enter your actual departure date and the return date and your rental fee will be calculated. You will receive the rental a couple of business days (time permitting) prior to your trip.
